Missing features and weird quirks in iOS 5

iOS 5

My fellow writer wrote about what Apple needs to add to iOS 5 but after playing around with iOS 5 and an iPhone 4S few the weekend I’ve noticed some interesting missing features that were actually there before the upgrade and are now missing without explanation.

Inability to turn off 3G

It seems Apple has taken away the ability to turn off 3G data on the iPhone 4S. I noticed this while camping this weekend and I wanted to preserve battery (since there was no electricity), I was quite shocked to learn this was taken away.

No camera zoom

Now I am a bit rusty but from what I remember, my iPhone 4 that was running iOS 4 had zoom capabilities when using the camera. When you use Apple new amazing camera on the iPhone 4S, it is gone. Maybe this was overlooked to get the iPhone out quickly but hopefully will be returned soon.

UPDATE: The camera does pinch-to-zoom, but it seems it is now the only way to zoom.

Cannot delete Photo Stream pictures

With the iCloud came a useful feature called Photo Stream. It automatically grabs the photos you’ve taken from your iPhone, or put into by iPhoto and syncs them to all iCloud registered devices. Of course, not every picture is gold and perfect but unfortunately Photo Stream does not allow deleting of individual photos. You must disable and delete all photos.

Siri requires data, no matter what

Siri is great and its the first huge step towards voice automating our lives, but Siri has one weakness, it requires internet. For example, while camping I wanted to set an alarm and show off Siri. Although the Alarm app is on the iPhone itself, it still needs cloud assistance to complete the task. Lets just say my Android loving friend will not let me live that down.

Newsstand app cannot be put into a folder

We brought this up already but the Newsstand app needs to be able to be put into a folder. No glitch required.

That’s all I’ve noticed in the short term. How about everyone else?

Erm… The camera does have zoom.

      Updated. Thank you

Both zoom and turning off 3g are still available in iOS 5. Although on some carriers the 3g can’t be turned off, but on my at&t it still can be.

We’ve discovered that zoom is now pinch only, but still no 3G toggle for iPhone 4S. Thank you for the information.

    This surprised me, as well.

When I got my iPhone 4S, AT&T had a problem and didn’t activate the data portion of my account. It got fixed pretty quick, but for Friday I ended up without 3G data.  About half-way through the day, Siri stopped paying attention to WiFi and any request came back with, “I’m sorry, there’s no network.”

When I left, I figured I’d call my roomate and tell her I was on the way.  No dice.  Huwha!?  This used to work fine in iOS 4.

And don’t even get me started on Siri’s definition of “next Tuesday…”

One thing I’m a bit curious about.  With all this cloudiness, what happens to those unlucky enough to not have an unlimited data plan?

It should be no surprise to require Internet access for Siri. When you use Siri, your phone only digitizes your phrase. It’s then sent to Apple’s servers (using the data connection), which do all the serious computing to figure out what you are saying and what the response should be. You know, all that AI stuff. Then, the servers send the appropriate response back to your phone.

The phone does not have the computing power or databases to be able to put Siri in it 100%.

One missing feature I was so looking forward to for my iPod Touch (4th gen.) was the much talked about Speech-to-Text powered by Nuance. Prior to the release of iOS 5 there were reports that it was to be available for the iPhone and iPod Touch, but not immediately available the iPad.

The new “Reminders” app is supposed to have location-based reminders, not just time-based reiminders.  The location option is missing even though its still in the documentation for iOS5.

It *does* have location-based reminders. I use them all the time.

Do you have Location Services turned on? Are Reminders turned on in Location Services?
