We’ve mentioned before that Microsoft was monetizing the Android platform by trying to force manufacturers who use it on their hardware to pay a fee so in the event that Microsoft sues Google and wins, they will not be affected by the outcome. HTC was the only manufacturer at first but today Microsoft announced that both Acer and Viewsonic have joined in. This is without a doubt another huge blow to Android.
Microsoft VP of IP and Licensing, Horacio Gutierrez stated:
“We are pleased that Acer is taking advantage of our industrywide licensing program established to help companies address Android’s IP issues”
“This agreement is an example of how industry leaders can reach commercially reasonable arrangements that address intellectual property.”
HTC is paying around $5 a device to Microsoft so at what point will it just be cheaper to make Windows Phone devices?
Don’t forget, Apple doesn’t have to beat Android, everyone else will.
