mobile safari domination

According to Net Applications tracking of mobile browsers, mobile Safari is continuing its domination. Consumers who have purchased iOS products are obviously browsing much more than users of other platforms.

Here’s a breakdown of the above chart:

  • Safari – 52.99%
  • Opera Mini – 20.77%
  • Android browser – 15.73%
  • Symbian – 5.83%
  • BlackBerry – 2.90%
  • Other – 1.78%

It’s interesting because Android actually has a larger marketshare and is increasing its lead almost every month so to see it with not even a third of mobile browsing market share as mobile Safari is quite a shock.

Maybe this is helping out desktop Safari as well.

Actually iOS has a larger installed base than Android (222 million versus 135 million for Android)

According to comScore, the number of active iOS devices in the USA in April outnumbered Android by 59% and by 116% in Europe.

Mind you this doesn’t explain the huge disparity in web share which is backed up by many other web analytics figures from the likes of StatOwl, Global Counter, W3Counter, WebMasterPro, Net Market Share, Clicky Web Analytics, AT Internet and WikiMedia.
All of these analytic sources report that iOS has between 2.22% and 5.15% of global web traffic compared to Android which only has between 0.5% and 1.84%.Add to this the fact that 71% of all app downloads last year were to iOS devices versus 5% to Android devices and it becomes evident that Android phones are mostly replacing dumb phones but not being used as smartphones.
