What Apple needs to address in Mac OS X Lion 10.7.1

Lion

Apple released Mac OS X Lion a few weeks ago and like most new releases, there are some bugs and other things that need to be addressed in the upcoming 10.7.1 update.

Oddly, Apple has skipped 10.7.1 for developers so it may be possible that 10.7.2 will be the next release but no one really knows for sure, but it’s safe to assume that 10.7.1 will be strictly to fix bugs and minor issues quickly before 10.7.2 comes in with new features.

Here’s some things we feel needs to be addressed ASAP:

Black screen and freezing

We wrote about how many users are suffering from bad drivers which is causing black screens and freezing for many users. The Apple Communities forum is 40+ pages long with no clear solution in site. It happening on old and new machines so let’s hope Apple finds and fixes this problem fast before it becomes a very public problem.

Wi-Fi

We also reported that a number of users are experiencing Wi-Fi troubles since upgrading to Lion but weren’t when previously running Snow Leopard. We offered some troubleshooting advice but it seems many are still having problems. Hopefully 10.7.1 will help out these users.

Disable Auto-Save

Although Auto Save is a new feature in Lion, many agree that there needs to be a simple way to turn this off (which there isn’t at the moment). Many are suffering from lag and freezing when auto saving big files and many are concerned about the way it may affect the life of their hard drives.

Bring back “Save as”

This is a personal issue. I don’t want to “Duplicate” or “Export”. Many are too used to hitting CMD + SHIFT + S and getting a Save As box, well since Lion, it has disappeared in many applications. Please bring this back.

More control over gestures

I think many agree, a 4 finger pitch inwards is not the best or most comfortable way to access Launchpad let alone 4 finger outwards to exit it. What is? Let the user decide. There is a great tool called BetterTouchTool that is great for customizing your multitouch trackpad or mouse but many obviously deal with what’s already built into the OS so let’s get some more options in 10.7.1.

Although we think Lion is a good OS overall, the four issues above could really make it great and keep the majority of users happy and save AppleCare employees some headaches.

What do you want to see fixed in Mac OS X Lion?

  • pfitzner

There won’t be a 10.7.1 release.  Developers already have 10.7.2!

    • Nopfitzner

Of course there will be a 10.7.1. pfitzner, everyone knows that the dev 10.7.2 is out. That has little to do with anything.

  • TC!!

There will be a 10.7.1, developers also have iTunes 10.5, we got 10.4. 10.7.2 gives all the iCloud goodness and allows Apple to release 10.7.1 to normal users without messing up their numbering system. When iCloud is ready for the public we’ll get 10.7.2 as well.

The number one thing I want from 10.7.1 is the use of both my monitors in full screen mode, having a screen full of some useless texture instead of being able to have two full screen apps is a royal PITA.

    “I think many unanimously agree . . ”
This is contradictory and makes no sense at all.
    Unanimously means everybody
Many means some but not unanimous.
Geez, learn some grammar or get out of the business.
