Over 97% of Android users still aren’t up to date, fragmentation continues

If you head over to the Android Developer page, you can see the chart above showing that over 97% of Android users aren’t running the newest version. The data was collected by users who visited the Android Market two weeks prior to March 15, 2011 so this is a very recent report.

As you can see, Android 2.2 “Froyo” is dominating with 61.3% of the user base. Android users running on a version of the newest 2.3 “Gingerbread” only make up 1.7% of the total amount.

We reported a couple months ago about the fragmentation in Android and it seems to be somewhat improving. It seems when Google updates Android that the hardware vendors are always one version behind.

The chart also a good indicator of how many people either buy a Nexus phone or root their phones for the vanilla Google Experience which looks to be a very small percentage.
